Waterfalls in Rishikesh

Rishikesh being a mountainous city and situated on the banks of River Ganga, has many waterfalls. One of the most exciting activities one can look forward during their visit to Rishikesh is trekking near waterfall. There are a few famous waterfalls and a lot of hidden waterfalls in Rishikesh. The city is also surrounded by famous reserved forest and one of them being the Rajaji National Park.

All these hidden treasures are well maintained and well preserved. So, one need to trek to reach these waterfalls that are not easily accessible. This could turn adventurous as you need to walk through the narrow trails on the jungle. It is also quite refreshing to stand near the waterfalls.  

Some of the most beautiful waterfall of all is Neergadh waterfall, Garud Chatti Waterfall and the Patna Waterfall.

Neer Garh Waterfall

It is situated 3 Kms north of Laxman Jhula Bridge on the south side of the River Ganges on the Badrinath Highway. It is easily accessible and thus the most frequented one. It also, has a small pool where people can bathe. Trekking through the waterfalls also provides you with a great opportunity to connect with nature and also provides a picturesque view of the Rishikesh city. When you take a shortcut route from Rajaji National Park, you can also spot many species of birds and butterflies.

How to Reach

From Railway station: Once you get down at the Rishikesh railway station head in the southern direction walk along for 79 m and take slight left towards Haridwar Road and continue with walking for 900 m and turn left onto Haridwar Road and pass by the Petrol Pump on the left in 1.0 Km and continue to walk for 2.0 Km onto Haridwar Rishikesh Badrinath Road/NH 58. You will have to pass by the colonhydrotherapyindia on the left in 1.6 Km and continue on the same road and at 4.3 Km take slight left onto Neergarh waterfall Road continue for 1.8 Km you will find the Neergarh Waterfall.

From Bus Depot: From Laxman Jhula Bus stand head in the northern direction towards Neelkanth Temple Road and walk for 2.9 Km and continue straight onto Neelkanth Temple Road and walk for 240 m and turn left onto Neelkanth Bridge Road and pass by the Glacier tour on the right in 500 m. Continue walking for 950m and turn left onto Haridwar Rishikesh Badrinath Rd/NH 58 and passby the Neergarh Tourist information centre on the right at 1.6 Km and continue at 1.7 Km take sharp right onto Neergarh waterfall road and at 1.8 Km you will find the Neer Garh Waterfall Road.

Garud Chatti & Phool Chatti Waterfalls

Garud Chatti waterfall is situated at Neelkanth road about 5 Km from Laxman Jhula and the trek starts from the temple that is dedicated to the Garud God. Garud Chatti waterfall is very beautiful especially during the monsoons when the water flows through seven different levels. A small spot, yet a place worth visit to spend some two hours; attracts tourists a lot. 3 Kms from the Garud Chatti waterfall is the Phool Chatti Waterfall in Rishikesh which is situated on the Neelkanth Road. The path to the waterfall is slippery and you need to take utmost caution at the time of trekking. One can also take a jeep en route to Neelkanth temple to visit these two waterfalls.

Patna Waterfall Rishikesh

Patna Waterfall is named after the small hamlet called “Patna” that is located on its way to the waterfall. The trek starts from 5 Kms from Laxman Jhula on to the Neelkanth temple Road. If you take Rajaji National Park forest, it will only take 1.5 Kms to reach it. It is also famous for several limestone caves located near the waterfall. As per the legends of the locals, there is a temple and an idol of Lord Vishnu located deep inside one of the caves. Though this path is quite steep, the natural beauty of the waterfall, the sound of the flowing water and the cool breeze that arises from the water will mesmerize you and leave you spellbound. Even in high summer, you will not feel the heat of the sun due to this.

Garud Chatti waterfall, Phool Chatti waterfall and Patna waterfall can be covered by hiring a jeep en route to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple.

Best Time to Visit

You can combine your sightseeing visit to the waterfalls of Rishikesh and adventure sports and the ideal time/season is October to May of every year with 30th of June being the last day for any kind of Adventure Sports. Even if you visit during high summer, the water and the cool breeze of the waterfall will make you feel quite pleasant and enjoyable.
